Afara Leadership Centre which has been working with University students for the past 27 years has now extended its activities to the new Pan Atlantic University popularly known as PAU in Ibeju Lekki. The University was formally opened in November 2014 and presently has three departments – Mass Communication, Accounting and Business Administration.
Afara started having formational and cultural activities almost immediately and … so far so good. Our very first program was a Study Techniques course anchored by Dr. Dolapo Afolami – the ex-Director of Afara and Dr. Joy Odimegwu a lecturer of the Pharmacology Department, University of Lagos. The students in attendance got tips on how to study professionally.
We have had a series of other activities and in the last three weeks plenty of fun. Our first cookery activity was on the 23rd of May in the elegant Pearl Hostel – a private female hostel on campus. Ijeoma was our Caterer and our ‘menu’ for the day was rich plum cake.
By the time participants wore their aprons and scarves, there was excitement in the air and we all looked like professionals. All the creaming and mixing was done manually and everyone had a chance to give it a try. Isoken who was with us for the first time was our photographer and she got several nice pictures with all sorts of poses and expressions. Ayo who attended the last retreat was also with us including Fisayo, Tolu, Imelda, Kome and Phoebe.
While we waited for our cake to bake, we had a short discussion – our usual practice- on generosity. Our Plum cake came out well and we all had a good chunk to ‘taste’. We are looking forward to our next cookery session.
Last weekend, we had another engaging session with Onyinye, on skin care and make up – typical!!! She talked about the basic needs of the skin as a sense organ as well as what it takes to have healthy and radiant skin. Onyi gave very simple and down to earth tips – drinking plenty of water, healthy eating, drinking tea, and ensuring ones skin is clean and finally of utmost importance – ENOUGH SLEEP.
The makeup session was appealing. We discovered talent in Tolu, and Zainab who is simply fantastic in her makeup skills. Onyi, Zainab and Tolu had their ‘clients’ Dara, Deborah and Imelda respectively. We had a variety to choose from – makeup for Party, a regular school day and bridal. With our ‘picture speak’, you be the judge of the outcome.
